NEV's or Street Legal Golf Cars
Only a short time ago golf carts were standard on golf courses but that was the only place. Now you'll see street legal golf carts also known as Neighborhood Electric Vehicles have grown increasingly in popularity.
Neighborhood Electric Vehicles or NEV's are growing at a tremendous rate that far exceed the cart manufacturer's expectations. They have become standard in resort areas, retirement communities, campgrounds, and golf course communities. The main difference between a regular golf cart and a street legal golf cart is that they usually seat four, are a little safer, and go a little faster too.
The original golf cart was actually an NEV and handicapped carts were used on golf courses. The golf cart market sprouted off electric vehicles that were used for other reasons. Now the market is back to where it began with NEV's filling a growing niche market.
Most of the state have laws relating to vehicles that are slow moving and 
electric which includes those that are classified as NEV's. Most of these laws relate to electrically powered equipment so if you have a gas engine you will need to check with your local governing bodies. Florida's golf cart law is here.
All states require the following for street legal golf carts:
1. The slow moving vehicle must not be capable of traveling at speeds more than thirty five miles per hour [35 mph].
2. Maximum seating capacity your street legal golf cart or NEV is four people.
3. Your street legal golf cart must not weight more then two thousand and two hundred pounds.
4. Your NEV must come equipped with a headlight, front turn lamps, rear turn lamps, tail lamps, and stop lamps.
5. It must be installed with reflex reflectors, exterior mirrors, and an interior mirror.
6. Your NEV must come with brakes, a windshield, and a vehicle identification number or VIN.
7. Each seat must have an approved seat belt.
8. It must have the manufacturer's certificate of origin as a low speed vehicle.
These are the basic law requirements. Do not use this list to decide what is legal and what is not in your province or state. you should check with local law officials in your county or DMV to make sure you will be legal.
